Introduction
Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram is Kerala's first medical college. It was established in 1951 and remains one of the strongest government MBBS options in the state. The college offers 250 MBBS seats and trains students inside a large academic and hospital system rather than a small standalone campus. Its 114-acre campus includes the main Medical College Hospital, SAT Hospital, the Super Speciality Block, the Multi-Speciality Block, the Dental College, the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the College of Nursing, and other major healthcare and academic units around the same medical hub.
The college's biggest strength is clinical scale. The broader hospital system reported 4,357 beds in the college's NIRF 2025 submission. The main Medical College Hospital alone has 1,950 beds. It admits around 80,000 patients a year and handles more than 7.5 million outpatient consultations. For MBBS students, that means strong bedside exposure in a high-volume tertiary-care setting from early on.

How to Apply
MBBS admission at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram is entrance-based. Students must qualify NEET-UG. For 15% All India Quota seats in government medical colleges, admission goes through MCC. For the state quota seats in Kerala government medical colleges, admission goes through the CEE Kerala centralised allotment process. In the Kerala process, candidates included in the State Medical Rank List register options online, download the allotment memo after seat allotment, pay the prescribed fee, and report to the allotted college for admission.
The student must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English individually.

The College of Pharmaceutical Sciences building
The campus is not limited to one teaching block and one hospital. It includes the Medical College Hospital, SAT Hospital, Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, Institute of Chest Diseases, Dental College, College of Nursing, College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Priyadarshini Institute of Paramedical Sciences, Child Development Centre, Regional Cancer Centre, SCTIMST, and the Multidisciplinary Research Laboratory.
History
Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram began taking shape in the late 1940s. The Travancore government set up a committee in 1948 to plan a medical college in Thiruvananthapuram, sanctioned the scheme that same year, and appointed Dr. C. O. Karunakaran to oversee its implementation.
The foundation stone was laid on 26 January 1950, and the first MBBS batch joined in August 1951.
The college was dedicated on 27 November 1951 and became Kerala's first medical college. SAT Hospital opened in January 1952, and the Medical College Hospital followed in 1954.
The campus expanded steadily over the decades with nursing, pharmacy, ophthalmology, paramedical, and other academic and clinical units. That early start, along with continuous expansion, is a big reason the college still holds its place as one of Kerala's most established government medical institutions.

Housing
Hostel facilities have been part of the campus from its early years, and the current hostel system is spread across multiple men's, women's, and postgraduate blocks within the medical college campus.
The women's hostel network includes Block 1 with 178 rooms and accommodation for 379 inmates, Block 2 with 30 rooms for 132 students, and Block 3 with 41 rooms plus dormitory space for 183 inmates. Ladies' Hostel Block 4, opened in March 2024, has a capacity of 404 students. A new ladies' hostel block is also under construction, planned for 404 students in 101 rooms.
The men's hostel has a capacity of 407 students. The Postgraduate Men's Hostel has two blocks: Block 1 has 149 rooms with 135 inmates, and Block 2 has 53 rooms with 78 inmates.
Hostel facilities on campus include mess and dining areas, reading space, and gym support in some blocks. The main women's hostel block also has a mess with three dining halls and a gym facility.
