Academic Excellence

Why Government Medical College Patiala Is a Preferred Choice for MBBS?

GMC Patiala pairs a seven-decade academic legacy with a large referral teaching hospital, super-speciality units, broad clinical exposure, affordable government fees, and an experienced faculty.

One of Punjab's Oldest Colleges

Government Medical College, Patiala, is one of the oldest medical colleges in Punjab, with a legacy of seven decades in medical education and the healthcare sector. It continues to grow and is committed to meeting the increasing demand for medical education.

A Large Teaching Hospital

Rajindra Hospital is the primary teaching hospital. It started as a 500-bed facility in 1954 and over time expanded to 1,009 beds, with an additional 121 beds in the TB hospital — a total capacity now of more than 1,130 beds — giving students a diverse range of real-time clinical exposure.

A Major Referral Centre

Because the hospital serves as a major referral center for southern Punjab, the patient inflow is high — approximately 1,000 per day. This gives MBBS students wide clinical exposure to different diseases and medical conditions.

Super-Speciality Units

The teaching hospital has several super-speciality units, including Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, and others. These departments allow students to see modern medical procedures and specialized treatments during their clinical postings.

Affordable Government Fees

At GMC Patiala, the total MBBS tuition cost for the entire course is approximately ₹8–9 lakh, which makes it reasonable compared to other private medical institutions and universities.

Higher Studies & Experienced Faculty

After MBBS, students can pursue higher education from the same campus or elsewhere after clearing NEET-PG. The institution has experienced professors, clinicians, and medical specialists — including Dr. Girish Sahni (Medical Superintendent), Dr. Ashwani Kumar (HOD, General Surgery), and Dr. Akash Deep Aggrawal (HOD, Forensic Medicine) — who guide students through lectures, ward rounds, research, and clinical case discussions.

History

History Information

Founded in 1953

Government Medical College Patiala was founded on 29 September 1953 at Patiala. The foundation stone of the medical college building was laid by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India, on 21 December 1953. It started with a mission to match the growing demand for trained doctors and healthcare facilities in a region that then had a population of about 20 lakhs. When the college began its academic activities, the associated Rajindra Hospital was still under construction.

Rajindra Hospital's Origins

Rajindra Hospital, the teaching hospital, has its own historical significance. It was named after Maharaja Rajendra Singh (1856–1900) of the former Patiala State. The foundation of the hospital was laid earlier by Maharaja Yadvinder Singh on 15 April 1950. Initially a 500-bed facility, it has expanded over the decades to more than 1,100 beds.

A Zonal TB Task Force Centre

The T.B. Hospital attached to the institution plays an important role in tuberculosis control programs. It has been designated as the Zonal Task Force Centre for North India for the involvement of medical colleges in the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme.

Seven Decades of Service

Across more than seven decades, the college and Rajindra Hospital have grown from a modest start into a major teaching and referral institution serving Patiala and southern Punjab, while training generations of doctors.
