History

History Information

A heritage building at Government Medical College, Nagpur

A heritage building at Government Medical College, Nagpur

From a 1943 Proposal to a 1947 Founding

Due to high demand for a medical college in the Nagpur region, a committee was appointed by Nagpur University's working council in 1943; its recommendations were positive, but the plan was delayed by the Second World War. The college started in 1947, when the Government of CP and Berar asked Dr. Jiwraj Mehta to suggest a suitable location, and he selected an open ground opposite Rajabaksha given the area's needy population.

Early Years

Construction began on 2 January 1948. Initially, the college started in the Engineering School campus, Sadar — pre-clinical classes were held there, while the Mayo Hospital served as the clinical training ground.

MCI Recognition (1952)

The college received MCI recognition in 1952, and the internship program started from 1953.
