Academic Excellence

Why Choose Government Medical College, Miraj, for MBBS?

GMC Miraj combines a 60+ year legacy, two attached teaching hospitals, well-equipped diagnostic facilities, high practical exposure, award-winning departments, active community-medicine programs and research grants.

A 60+ Year Legacy & Two Hospitals

GMC Miraj is one of the oldest Indian medical colleges, with a legacy of about 64 years. It has two attached hospitals — Government Medical College & Hospital, Miraj (Miraj Civil Hospital, ~320 beds + a 30-bed emergency/casualty wing) and Padmabhushan Vasantdada Patil General Hospital, Sangli (~380 beds).

Well-Equipped Diagnostics & High Footfall

The teaching hospitals have OTs, ICUs (including a modular ICU), ventilators, dialysis units, X-ray, CT, MRI, a blood bank, pharmacy and emergency services. OPD inflow across both hospitals is about 1,000–1,500 a day and IPD footfall about 200–300 daily.

High Practical Exposure

A batch of 200 MBBS students gets 8 cadavers (a 25:1 student-to-cadaver ratio). As per current students, practical exposure is very high, with daily practical classes.

Award-Winning Departments

The Pathology Department won a prize at MAPCON for excellence in histopathology, and the blood bank at P.V.P. General Hospital, Sangli, received the second prize for the highest voluntary blood donations for a blood bank in Maharashtra.

Community Medicine Programs

The college runs a Rural Health Centre in Tasgaon and an Urban Health Centre in Miraj, giving students the chance to take part in health surveys, immunisation drives and community-medicine training.

Research & Publications

Some departments publish case reports and small clinical studies in Indian medical journals such as IJID and the Journal of Postgraduate Medicine, and the college receives minor grants from ICMR and state authorities for public-health studies.

The historic / heritage buildings at GMC Miraj

The historic / heritage buildings at GMC Miraj

Initiated in 1961 under Shri Vasantrao Patil

The idea for a new government medical college was initiated in 1961 under the leadership of Shri Vasantrao Patil. A provisional medical college committee was set up and recommended Wanless Hospital to become the teaching hospital. In 1962, the government approved the project and appointed Dr. B. B. Sethana as the first principal.

Inaugural Class of 30 in 1962

The college started with an inaugural class of 30 students in 1962. Initial resources were limited, and much equipment was sourced from colleges in Poona and Bombay. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on 18 November 1962 by Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, the President of India.

From Poona University to Shivaji University

In June 1963, the college's affiliation was transferred from Poona University to the newly established Shivaji University. The first batch of MBBS graduates completed their studies and started their internships in 1967.

Six Decades of Medical Education

From a 30-student inaugural class in 1962, GMC Miraj has grown into an established medical college serving the Sangli–Miraj region.
