History

Introduction

GMC Machilipatnam

Government Medical College (GMC), Machilipatnam is one of Andhra Pradesh's newest government medical colleges, established in 2023 in the historic coastal port town of Machilipatnam, the headquarters of Krishna district. The college was built around the existing Government Teaching General Hospital, Machilipatnam, a roughly 553-bed hospital that began as a district hospital in 1985 and was later expanded with World Bank support. GMC Machilipatnam is affiliated to Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), which granted its Letter of Permission in April 2023. It admits 150 MBBS students each year. For a student, its appeal is direct: a brand-new government college with very low fees, a large established teaching hospital, and a coastal location about 70 kilometres from Vijayawada.

Academic Excellence

Why Choose Government Medical College, Machilipatnam, for MBBS

GMC Machilipatnam is a young college, so you choose it for what it offers right now: a brand-new NMC-recognised government college with very low fees, built on a large and well-established teaching hospital, in a calm coastal town within easy reach of Vijayawada.

A New NMC-Recognised Government College

GMC Machilipatnam was established in 2023 and recognised by the National Medical Commission, affiliated to Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences. Students joining now are among its first cohorts, with new academic blocks, laboratories and faculty being put in place.

Built on an Established 553-Bed Hospital

Unlike a college starting clinical training from scratch, GMC Machilipatnam is built around the Government Teaching General Hospital, Machilipatnam, which has run since 1985 and now has around 553 beds, so students get clinical exposure at a hospital with decades of patient flow.

150 MBBS Seats

With 150 MBBS seats, GMC Machilipatnam is one of the larger of Andhra Pradesh's new government colleges, offering a sizeable peer group and well-staffed departments for a college of its age.

Among the Lowest MBBS Fees in India

As a state government college, GMC Machilipatnam charges very low tuition set by the Andhra Pradesh State Fee Committee, a small fraction of what private or deemed colleges charge, making a recognised MBBS genuinely affordable.

A Coastal District-Headquarters Town

Machilipatnam is the headquarters of Krishna district, a historic port town on the Bay of Bengal, about 70 kilometres from Vijayawada. It offers a calmer, more affordable setting than a metro while staying connected to a major city.

Part of Andhra Pradesh's Medical College Expansion

GMC Machilipatnam is one of several new government medical colleges opened across Andhra Pradesh to expand MBBS seats and place a medical college within reach of every district, increasing the state's overall doctor output.

  • Best decision of my life

    Student — early batch

Being one of the first batches means you see the college grow around you, but the teaching hospital is already busy and established, so clinical exposure starts strong.

  • World-class clinical training

    Student — MBBS

Fees are very low and Machilipatnam is calm and affordable. As a new college, some hostel and campus facilities are still being completed, so a bit of patience helps.
