Previously affiliated with the University of Calicut, it is now affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS). General Medical College Hospital (GMCH) has approximately 1,183 beds with surgery, trauma, and general medicine wards; the Institute of Maternal and Child Health (IMCH) has approximately 1,100 beds with paediatric facilities.
The Savithri Devi Saboo Institute has approximately 100+ beds for oncology, and the Chest Disease Hospital has approximately 100 beds for respiratory illnesses. A Super-Speciality Block houses various specialised units.
The college's Institute of Palliative Medicine is the first WHO Collaborating Centre in India, allowing students to learn palliative care through this collaboration.

Government Medical College, Kozhikode, was founded in 1957, the second government medical college in Kerala. Its foundation stone was laid by Governor Ramakrishna Rao, and it was inaugurated by the then Health Minister A. R. Menon.
