Introduction

Gandhi Medical College, Secunderabad

Gandhi Medical College, Secunderabad, is one of the most established government medical colleges in Telangana. It began in 1954 and has been part of a much older hospital system that goes back to 1851. This makes a difference as for MBBS, legacy is determined by the depth of the teaching culture, how established the departments are, and how strong the hospital-based training has become over time.

  • MBBS Entrance Exam:NEET-UG
  • MBBS FeesApprox. ₹85,000 for the full course
  • Eligibility Criteria:10+2 + NEET-UG
  • MBBS SeatsApprox. 250

The college has 250 MBBS seats, and the attached Gandhi Hospital now has around 2,016 beds, making it one of the largest government teaching hospitals in Telangana. Academic Excellence

Why Gandhi Medical College Is a Top Choice for MBBS?

Gandhi pairs a credible medical legacy with large-scale clinical exposure at a 2,016-bed hospital, a postgraduate and super-speciality ecosystem, a serious tertiary-care setup, affordable government fees, and a broad hospital system.

A Credible Medical Legacy

It has a strong and credible medical legacy. Gandhi Medical College is not a newer institution trying to build a reputation. It has been around since 1954, and its attached hospital system has roots going back to 1851. That kind of history gives the college a long-standing place in medical education in Telangana.

Large-Scale Clinical Exposure

The clinical exposure is on a very large scale. Gandhi Hospital has around 2,016 beds. That is a major advantage for MBBS because clinical learning improves in a hospital that is large, active, and constantly handling a heavy patient load. Students do not just study medicine here. They see it closely and regularly.

Beyond MBBS

The academic environment goes well beyond MBBS. Gandhi Medical College has 217 postgraduate seats along with super-specialty programs. That gives MBBS students a more layered learning environment. They study in a system where junior doctors, postgraduates, and advanced specialty departments are all part of daily academic life.

Serious Tertiary-Care Setup

It is linked to a serious tertiary-care hospital setup. Gandhi Hospital has been identified as the first open-heart surgery centre in the combined Andhra Pradesh region and the first to have Cath Lab facilities for DM Cardiology training there. That tells you the institution is not limited to routine teaching-hospital exposure. It has depth in higher-end clinical care too.

Affordable Government Fees

The fee structure is still in the government-college range. For many students, affordability is one of the biggest reasons to target a college like this. The 2025–26 MBBS fee structure shows a yearly tuition fee of ₹10,000. The total college fee is around ₹29,000 for OC/BC students and around ₹27,000 for SC/ST students. That makes Gandhi far more accessible than private MBBS options.

A Broad Hospital System

The hospital setup is broad, not narrow. The college has access to a hospital system with emergency services, OP services, IP services, investigations, imaging, blood bank support, and organ transplant services. It also has exposure to super-specialty branches such as nephrology, paediatric surgery, plastic surgery, and urology. For MBBS students, that breadth matters because it improves the range of cases and departments they encounter during training.

History

History Information

An Old Hospital Base (1851)

Gandhi Medical College is one of the oldest and most established medical institutions in Telangana, and its story is closely tied to the evolution of Gandhi Hospital. The hospital began in 1851 as a small infirmary with only a few wards.

From Cantonment Hospital to KEM (1900–1913)

Over time, it expanded into a much larger public-care institution, became the Cantonment Hospital in 1900, and later came to be known as King Edward Memorial Hospital in 1913.

The College Takes Shape (1954–1956)

The medical college itself was established in 1954, giving the institution a formal academic foundation. It was inaugurated in 1955 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and it received recognition from the Medical Council of India in 1956.

Growth to the Musheerabad Campus

After that, the institution continued to grow, first moving to Basheer Bagh in 1958 and later shifting to its present Musheerabad campus, where the new college building was inaugurated in 2003. That long journey, from a historic hospital base to a full-fledged government medical college, is a big part of why Gandhi Medical College still holds such a strong place in medical education in the region.

Scholarship & Financial

Scholarship & Financial Aid

The fee burden at Gandhi Medical College is already much lower than in private MBBS colleges, but eligible students can still look at scholarship support through state, central, and alumni-backed routes.

  • Telangana Post-Matric Scholarship Support

Students in eligible professional courses can apply through the Telangana ePASS system. The portal is built around post-matric scholarship services and also provides sections for eligibility, courses covered, timelines, application tracking, and grievance support. That makes it one of the main routes students in Telangana usually monitor for financial aid.

  • Central Scholarship Schemes Through NSP

Students can also explore central scholarship schemes through the National Scholarship Portal. From AY 2024-25 onward, OTR is required to apply through NSP. The portal carries multiple relevant schemes, including the Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships for College and University Students, the SC Top Class Education scholarship, the ST higher education scholarship, and scholarship windows for students with disabilities.

  • Alumni-Backed Financial Grant

Gandhi Medical College also has an alumni-supported financial grant model for MBBS students with limited means. The selection is based mainly on financial need, with applications reviewed through a committee process. The programme is designed to support undergraduate students through recurring monthly assistance during the course, subject to annual review.

Application Process

Track Telangana ePASS

Students applying under Telangana-based support usually need to track the ePASS post-matric route, check whether their course and category fall within the eligible bracket, and complete the application within the published timeline. The same portal also handles tracking, remittance details, and grievance redressal.

Register on NSP (OTR) for Central Schemes

For central scholarship schemes, the process begins with One Time Registration (OTR) on the National Scholarship Portal. After that, students apply under the relevant scholarship window and follow the verification stages listed against the scheme.

Apply for the Alumni Grant via College Notice

For the alumni-backed financial grant, students apply against a college-level notice, submit the required documents, and are shortlisted mainly on the basis of financial need. The process also includes review and interview before final selection.
