History
Introduction
Gandhi Medical College, Secunderabad, is one of the most established government medical colleges in Telangana. It began in 1954 and has been part of a much older hospital system that goes back to 1851. This makes a difference as for MBBS, legacy is determined by the depth of the teaching culture, how established the departments are, and how strong the hospital-based training has become over time.
The college has 250 MBBS seats, and the attached Gandhi Hospital now has around 2,016 beds, making it one of the largest government teaching hospitals in Telangana. For an MBBS student, this means a serious clinical environment from the start, more patient movement, broader case exposure, and a busier hospital system to learn in.

The first phase of MBBS is where students build their core understanding of the human body in its normal state. This is the stage that helps them understand body structure, function, and the biochemical processes that support life before they move into disease-focused learning.
1.5 Years
Once the basics are in place, the course moves into subjects that explain how diseases develop, how they are identified, how medicines act in the body, and how medical practice connects with legal and public-health systems. This part of MBBS acts as the bridge between theory and real-world medicine.
2 Years
As students enter the clinical phase, learning becomes much more patient-facing. Training begins to move through wards, OPDs, bedside discussions, case presentations, and hospital-based teaching across the main branches of medicine and surgery.
After completing the academic phase, MBBS students go through a 12-month compulsory rotating internship. This is the stage where classroom learning and hospital exposure come together in a much more practical way. Students rotate across key departments, take part in supervised patient care, and begin to understand the day-to-day responsibility of working in a hospital setting. The internship usually includes rotations in the following areas:
| Duration | Department |
|---|---|

World-Class Campus
Gandhi Medical College functions from its Musheerabad campus in Secunderabad and is attached to Gandhi Hospital, which gives students access to a very large government teaching-hospital environment.
The attached hospital has more than 2,000 beds, which makes the clinical base here one of the biggest strengths of the college.
History
Gandhi Medical College is one of the oldest and most established medical institutions in Telangana, and its story is closely tied to the evolution of Gandhi Hospital. The hospital began in 1851 as a small infirmary with only a few wards.
Over time, it expanded into a much larger public-care institution, became the Cantonment Hospital in 1900, and later came to be known as King Edward Memorial Hospital in 1913.
The medical college itself was established in 1954, giving the institution a formal academic foundation. It was inaugurated in 1955 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, and it received recognition from the Medical Council of India in 1956.
After that, the institution continued to grow, first moving to Basheer Bagh in 1958 and later shifting to its present Musheerabad campus, where the new college building was inaugurated in 2003. That long journey, from a historic hospital base to a full-fledged government medical college, is a big part of why Gandhi Medical College still holds such a strong place in medical education in the region.

Scholarship & Financial
The fee burden at Gandhi Medical College is already much lower than in private MBBS colleges, but eligible students can still look at scholarship support through state, central, and alumni-backed routes.
Students in eligible professional courses can apply through the Telangana ePASS system. The portal is built around post-matric scholarship services and also provides sections for eligibility, courses covered, timelines, application tracking, and grievance support. That makes it one of the main routes students in Telangana usually monitor for financial aid.
Students can also explore central scholarship schemes through the National Scholarship Portal. From AY 2024-25 onward, OTR is required to apply through NSP. The portal carries multiple relevant schemes, including the Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships for College and University Students, the SC Top Class Education scholarship, the ST higher education scholarship, and scholarship windows for students with disabilities.
Gandhi Medical College also has an alumni-supported financial grant model for MBBS students with limited means. The selection is based mainly on financial need, with applications reviewed through a committee process. The programme is designed to support undergraduate students through recurring monthly assistance during the course, subject to annual review.
Students applying under Telangana-based support usually need to track the ePASS post-matric route, check whether their course and category fall within the eligible bracket, and complete the application within the published timeline. The same portal also handles tracking, remittance details, and grievance redressal.
For central scholarship schemes, the process begins with One Time Registration (OTR) on the National Scholarship Portal. After that, students apply under the relevant scholarship window and follow the verification stages listed against the scheme.
For the alumni-backed financial grant, students apply against a college-level notice, submit the required documents, and are shortlisted mainly on the basis of financial need. The process also includes review and interview before final selection.
