History
Introduction
The Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS), Port Blair is the only medical college in the entire Union Territory of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and it serves a population of roughly four lakh people spread across hundreds of islands. ANIIMS was established in the 2015-16 academic session with 100 MBBS seats by the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Medical Education and Research Society (ANIMERS) under the A&N Administration, by upgrading the existing Govind Ballabh Pant (GB Pant) Hospital into a teaching institute. It is affiliated to Pondicherry University and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), and it now admits 114 MBBS students each year. Its first MBBS batch graduated in 2019. For a student, the institute offers something no mainland college can: clinical training as the apex referral centre for a remote island territory, alongside a defined pathway into the islands' own health service through a one-year compulsory service bond.

Recognition & Prestige
ANIIMS is a young, single-college institution, so the meaningful numbers are not league-table ranks but its scale and role:
Only 1
Medical college in the whole A&N Islands
ANIIMS does not currently appear in the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) Medical rankings. This is expected: the NIRF ranks a limited band of established institutions on research output, perception and graduation outcomes, and ANIIMS only admitted its first batch in 2015 and graduated it in 2019. The tiles above therefore show verifiable facts (only college in the UT, year established, seats, teaching-hospital beds) rather than a rank we cannot evidence. The GB Pant Hospital bed count is shown as ~545 per the official ANIIMS prospectus; some Andaman administration pages list it lower (around 412–500). Confirm the current bed strength.

Academic Excellence
ANIIMS is not a college you choose for a ranking. You choose it for a very specific combination: it is the only medical college in the Union Territory, it is NMC-recognised and Pondicherry University-affiliated, its fees are among the lowest in the country, and it trains you inside the single hospital that the entire island population depends on.

How to Apply
Admission to MBBS at ANIIMS is entirely through NEET-UG merit. Of the 114 seats, 17 (15%) fall under the All India Quota, allotted through the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) of the DGHS, Government of India, and 97 fall under the Union Territory quota, counselled by the A&N Administration. The UT quota is heavily structured to protect island residents, with reserved categories for tribal communities, long-settled families and other local residents, plus an EWS allocation. There is no private or NRI quota. Candidates must apply through the A&N common admission portal and meet domicile and category requirements for UT seats.
The student must have passed Class 12 (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English as compulsory subjects, from a recognised board.
Subjects:
Minimum qualifying-exam marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together: 50% for General/EWS, 40% for SC/ST/OBC, and 45% for PwBD candidates (per NEET-UG norms).
| Category | Minimum PCB % |
|---|---|
| General / EWS | 50% |
| OBC / SC / ST | 40% |
| PwBD | 45% |
The student must be at least 17 years old as on 31 December of the year of admission.
The student must have qualified NEET-UG in the same year, meeting the category percentile cut-off. UT-quota seats additionally require A&N domicile and category certificates.

World-Class Campus
ANIIMS operates from a campus at Atlanta Point, near the Cellular Jail complex in Port Blair (officially renamed Sri Vijaya Puram in 2024), with a permanent campus under development at Corbyn's Cove. The pre-clinical and para-clinical departments occupy dedicated academic buildings, and clinical training takes place at the Govind Ballabh Pant (GB Pant) Hospital, the apex government hospital of the Union Territory. As described in the official prospectus, the hospital provides a new OPD block, diagnostic laboratories, a blood bank, ICU and ICCU, modular operating theatres, haemodialysis, and imaging including CT, MRI, ultrasound and digital X-ray. The institute has five audio-visual lecture halls, an examination hall seating around 250, and a double-storied, fully air-conditioned central library with internet, Wi-Fi and subscriptions to Indian and international medical journals. Hostels for boys and girls, a dining block, and a separate interns' and residents' hostel are provided, and students can use the Netaji Sports Complex with its gymnasium, swimming pool, indoor stadium and playgrounds.
The current campus is at Atlanta Point near the Cellular Jail, with clinical training at the adjacent GB Pant Hospital and a permanent campus under development at Corbyn's Cove.

Scholarship & Financial
ANIIMS students can access central and Union Territory government scholarships; the official prospectus does not describe an institute-specific scholarship scheme, so the verified routes are the standard government schemes below. No ANIIMS-specific scholarship has been invented here:
The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (SC/OBC) and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (ST) fund Post-Matric Scholarships for professional courses including MBBS, covering tuition and a maintenance allowance, applied for through the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in).
Administered by the Ministry of Education via the National Scholarship Portal, CSSS supports meritorious students from families below a defined income threshold who qualify in the top percentile of their Class 12 board, providing an annual maintenance allowance renewable on performance.
As a Union Territory institution, ANIIMS students who are island residents may be eligible for A&N Administration education support and reserved-category assistance; eligibility and current schemes should be confirmed with the A&N Directorate concerned and the institute's office.
Apply for government scholarships through the National Scholarship Portal and the relevant A&N Administration department; the ANIIMS office can advise on documentation.
Verify eligibility, income and category-certificate requirements and deadlines, and submit documents before the window closes.
After review, eligible students receive the scholarship amount directly in their bank account.
