History

Introduction

ANIIMS Port Blair

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences (ANIIMS), Port Blair is the only medical college in the entire Union Territory of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and it serves a population of roughly four lakh people spread across hundreds of islands. ANIIMS was established in the 2015-16 academic session with 100 MBBS seats by the Andaman & Nicobar Islands Medical Education and Research Society (ANIMERS) under the A&N Administration, by upgrading the existing Govind Ballabh Pant (GB Pant) Hospital into a teaching institute. It is affiliated to Pondicherry University and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC), and it now admits 114 MBBS students each year. Its first MBBS batch graduated in 2019. For a student, the institute offers something no mainland college can: clinical training as the apex referral centre for a remote island territory, alongside a defined pathway into the islands' own health service through a one-year compulsory service bond.

Recognition & Prestige

Rankings

ANIIMS is a young, single-college institution, so the meaningful numbers are not league-table ranks but its scale and role:

  • Only 1

Medical college in the whole A&N Islands

ANIIMS does not currently appear in the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) Medical rankings. This is expected: the NIRF ranks a limited band of established institutions on research output, perception and graduation outcomes, and ANIIMS only admitted its first batch in 2015 and graduated it in 2019. The tiles above therefore show verifiable facts (only college in the UT, year established, seats, teaching-hospital beds) rather than a rank we cannot evidence. The GB Pant Hospital bed count is shown as ~545 per the official ANIIMS prospectus; some Andaman administration pages list it lower (around 412–500). Confirm the current bed strength.

Academic Excellence

Why Choose ANIIMS, Port Blair, for MBBS

ANIIMS is not a college you choose for a ranking. You choose it for a very specific combination: it is the only medical college in the Union Territory, it is NMC-recognised and Pondicherry University-affiliated, its fees are among the lowest in the country, and it trains you inside the single hospital that the entire island population depends on.

The Only Medical College in the Union Territory

ANIIMS is the only medical college in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. For a student from the islands, it is the single local route to an MBBS without leaving home; for a mainland student, it is one of the rare government colleges where you become part of an island's whole health system rather than one hospital among many.

NMC-Recognised and Pondicherry University-Affiliated

ANIIMS is recognised by the National Medical Commission and awards an MBBS degree affiliated to Pondicherry University, a central university. The degree is valid for registration, for NEET-PG, and for the NExT examination, exactly like any other Indian government medical college.

Apex Referral Training at GB Pant Hospital

Students train at the Govind Ballabh Pant (GB Pant) Hospital, the only tertiary referral hospital for the whole Union Territory. Because there is no larger hospital to refer onward to, students see the full range of acute medicine, trauma, obstetric and surgical emergencies that on the mainland would be dispersed across several institutions.

A Clinical Profile You Will Not See on the Mainland

The islands present tropical and sub-tropical disease, marine and diving injuries, snake-bite, and the logistics of treating patients evacuated by boat and air from remote islands. This is rich training for emergency medicine, community medicine and public health, and it is genuinely difficult to find elsewhere in India.

Among the Lowest MBBS Fees in India

ANIIMS is a Union Territory government college, and the tuition is approximately ₹18,000 per semester, with roughly ₹79,100 payable at the time of admission including one-time and refundable deposits. The full course tuition is a small fraction of what a private or deemed medical college charges for a single year.

A Defined Pathway into the Islands' Health Service

Admission carries a one-year compulsory service bond to serve in the Andaman & Nicobar Administration after graduation. For students committed to the islands, this is not a catch but a feature: it is a structured entry into a health service that actively needs doctors, in a place where they are deeply valued.

How to Apply

Admission Process for MBBS

Admission to MBBS at ANIIMS is entirely through NEET-UG merit. Of the 114 seats, 17 (15%) fall under the All India Quota, allotted through the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) of the DGHS, Government of India, and 97 fall under the Union Territory quota, counselled by the A&N Administration. The UT quota is heavily structured to protect island residents, with reserved categories for tribal communities, long-settled families and other local residents, plus an EWS allocation. There is no private or NRI quota. Candidates must apply through the A&N common admission portal and meet domicile and category requirements for UT seats.

    Resident — MBBS early batch

GB Pant being the only tertiary hospital in the islands means you carry real responsibility early. You see emergencies that on the mainland would be split across several hospitals, and the consultants know every student by name.

  • World-class clinical training

    Intern — MBBS

The cohort is small, so teaching is personal and you are never just a face in a 250-strong lecture hall. The trade-off is that some super-specialty cases are referred to the mainland, so you plan electives accordingly.
