Introduction

AMC Visakhapatnam

Andhra Medical College (AMC), Visakhapatnam, established in 1923 and affiliated to Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (NTRUHS), is Andhra Pradesh's oldest medical college. It admits 250 MBBS students annually and trains them at King George Hospital (KGH) — a ~1,700+ bed apex tertiary centre for north coastal AP and south Odisha. Recognised by the NMC, AMC combines a 100-year history with the clinical depth of a major port-city referral hospital, serving a catchment from the AP coast through the Araku Valley tribal highlands to Visakhapatnam's steel and petroleum industrial corridors.

Academic Excellence

Why Choose Andhra Medical College, Visakhapatnam, for MBBS

AMC combines a century-old legacy, the ~1,700-bed King George Hospital, a rare occupational-medicine case mix from Vizag's steel/petroleum/naval economy, deep tribal and coastal disease exposure, and NTRUHS academic governance.

A 1923 Legacy — AP's Oldest

AMC's 1923 founding makes it Andhra Pradesh's oldest medical college, predating the state itself by three decades — a century of teaching tradition, community trust and professional identity.

King George Hospital (1,700+ Beds)

KGH is the apex tertiary referral for north coastal AP (Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam — ~7 million people) and south Odisha, with high trauma volume from NH-16, naval and industrial accidents, giving full-spectrum tertiary exposure.

Industrial & Occupational Medicine

Vizag's heavy industry — the RINL Steel Plant, HPCL Refinery and Hindustan Zinc — brings steel-industry pneumoconiosis, noise-induced hearing loss, hydrocarbon toxicology and thermal burns to KGH as routine clinical presentations.

Naval & Maritime Medicine

As home to the Eastern Naval Command (India's largest), Vizag generates naval occupational presentations at KGH — barotrauma, naval-diving decompression illness and maritime trauma — a case mix unique to AMC among Indian colleges.

Tribal & Coastal Disease Ecology

Araku Valley Adivasi communities (Kondh, Koya, Gadaba and others) send complex cases to KGH — sickle cell disease, falciparum malaria, TB and malnutrition — alongside a Bay of Bengal coastal ecology of fishing-injury, cyclone trauma and post-monsoon waterborne disease.

NTRUHS Academic Framework

Affiliation to Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences (est. 1986) provides structured academic governance, CBME implementation oversight and research-grant administration across AP's government medical colleges.
