Introduction

AIIMS, Nagpur

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Nagpur is among the newer generation of AIIMS established under Phase 2 of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), the Government of India's programme to expand tertiary healthcare and medical education capacity in regions historically dependent on referral to distant metropolitan centres. Located at Plot No. 2, Sector-20, MIHAN (Multi-modal International Hub Airport Nagpur), adjacent to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, the institute occupies one of India's most strategically positioned campuses, within the Nagpur SEZ that forms the centrepiece of India's aerotropolis infrastructure ambition.

  • MBBS Entrance Exam:NEET-UG
  • MBBS FeesApprox. ₹1,350 per year
  • Eligibility Criteria:10+2 + NEET
  • MBBS Seats125

Beyond its campus location, AIIMS Nagpur carries a distinct public health mandate. Nagpur is the administrative capital of the Vidarbha division of Maharashtra, a region covering 12 districts with a combined population exceeding 2 crore, and a disease burden shaped by cotton farming, pesticide exposure, nutritional deficiencies, vector-borne diseases, and a documented farmer suicide crisis that makes psychiatric exposure here unlike any other AIIMS campus in India. The institute serves patients not only from Maharashtra but from adjoining districts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, giving students a breadth of clinical presentation that reflects both the geography and the epidemiology of India's demographic interior.

Academic Excellence

Why Is AIIMS Nagpur Considered a Top Medical College?

AIIMS Nagpur is funded directly by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and operates under the same governance framework as AIIMS Delhi. Curriculum structure, faculty appointment norms, infrastructure benchmarks, and academic calendar are set at the central level, ensuring that the AIIMS name carries consistent quality regardless of campus. The quality floor that results is one no private college can replicate at comparable fees, and the credential is recognised nationally and internationally.

Affordable Fees

Annual tuition at AIIMS Nagpur is approximately Rs. 1,350, mirroring the fee structure of every AIIMS campus. Against a private medical college charging Rs. 10 lakh to Rs. 25 lakh per year, the difference over five and a half years is more than Rs. 60 lakh for most families. The Government of India fully subsidises the cost of training each MBBS student, making this a publicly funded investment in national healthcare capacity rather than a commercial transaction.

Strategic Location

The MIHAN SEZ (Multi-modal International Hub Airport Nagpur) is a 4,354-hectare aerotropolis development adjacent to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, just 2 km from the AIIMS campus. This location gives the institute access to a rapidly developing urban and industrial environment attracting multinational investment, healthcare sector growth, and population concentration, all of which directly affect the patient volume and case diversity available to clinical students.

Disease Exposure

Nagpur sits at the heart of Vidarbha, a cotton-farming region that accounts for some of the highest rates of pesticide poisoning presentations in any Indian hospital catchment area. The region also carries the heaviest burden of farmer suicides in India, meaning the Psychiatry department at AIIMS Nagpur encounters a clinical volume and case complexity in mental health and toxicology that is rare among new AIIMS campuses. Nutritional deficiencies, tuberculosis, malaria, and vector-borne diseases common to rural Maharashtra complete a disease profile that prepares graduates for FMGE, NExT, and independent clinical practice.

Connectivity

Nagpur is the geographic centre of India, historically marked by the Zero Mile stone, and is one of the most well-connected cities in the country by rail and road. Nagpur Junction is a major national rail hub with direct trains to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bhopal. Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport is within 2 km of campus, meaning students from any part of India can reach the institute with a single flight.

820-Plus-Bed Hospital

AIIMS Nagpur Hospital has 820 functional beds, including 76 ICU beds; OPD 4,000-4,500 patients/day. The hospital draws patients from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, covering a combined population catchment in the tens of millions. This cross-state patient inflow means clinical students encounter disease presentations shaped by the agricultural, industrial, and tribal health contexts of central India, including presentations rarely seen in metropolitan teaching hospitals. The hospital's bed strength is expanding rapidly as new infrastructure is commissioned.

Research

AIIMS Nagpur operates within proximity to the ICMR's National Institute for Research in Environmental Health, which focuses on environmental toxicology, pesticide research, and industrial health. The geographic and research alignment creates a collaborative environment for students and faculty working on environmental health, occupational medicine, and agricultural toxicology, areas directly relevant to the Vidarbha patient population and increasingly relevant to national research funding priorities.

A New AIIMS for Central India

AIIMS Nagpur was established under Phase 2 of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), which identified Maharashtra — and specifically the Vidarbha region — as a priority for a new AIIMS campus. Despite Maharashtra's status as one of India's most economically developed states, Vidarbha remained severely underserved in specialist and super-specialist care. The decision to site the campus at MIHAN, Nagpur, reflected the government's intent to integrate the institution into a strategic infrastructure development zone adjacent to a major international airport.

Established in 2018

The institute was formally established in 2018 and admitted its inaugural MBBS batch in the same year. In the years since, AIIMS Nagpur has progressively commissioned academic departments, expanded its hospital infrastructure beyond 820 operational beds, and launched postgraduate MD and MS programmes in several disciplines.
