Introduction
The Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) has a legacy of approximately 75+ years in quality medical education and is administered by the Indian Armed Forces. It was established as a postgraduate teaching institute and introduced an undergraduate wing in 1962. AFMC is ranked 4th by India Today in 2025 and is known for quality medical education and innovative research. The college offers a variety of medical programs along with super-speciality courses, and the Command Hospital ensures extensive clinical training for students.

How to Apply
AFMC Pune offers approximately 150 MBBS seats — about 145 for Indian citizens (115 male and 30 female) and 5 for government-sponsored candidates from friendly foreign countries. Candidates must first qualify NEET-UG (NTA), then register and apply for AFMC on the DGHS website during the registration window. Around 2,000 students are shortlisted for the AFMC screening — ToELR (Test of English Language and Reasoning), PAT (Psychological Assessment Test), a personal interview, and a medical examination — and final selection is based on the combined NEET-UG and screening-test scores.
The student must have cleared Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English, with at least 60% aggregate in the three science subjects, at least 50% in English, and at least 50% in each science subject.

AFMC Pune has a campus of approximately 190 acres in Wanowrie, with an administration block, the Command Hospital (~1,047 beds), the DR Otilia Mascarenhas Sports Facility, the Capt. Devashish Sharma Kirti Chakra Parade Ground, laboratories, departmental blocks, the Ashoka Chakra Library, two auditoria, and a residential complex.

History
AFMC Pune has the distinction of being the first medical college founded by the Armed Forces of any country in Asia. It provides medical education aligned with the specific healthcare requirements of the Armed Forces, and has been NAAC-accredited with an A+ grade since 2003.
The college was founded on 1 May 1948, with Col. P. P. Chowdry, MC, as the first Commandant of AFMC.

Housing
AFMC provides separate hostels for boys and girls within the main campus, and living in the allotted residence is compulsory for all cadets during their academic time.
The old boys' hostel (built 1965) has 6 blocks of three floors with approximately 277 single-seater and 162 double-seater rooms. The new boys' hostel has 4 blocks of four floors each with about 18 spacious rooms with balconies. A separate wing for postgraduate officers is also within the boys' hostel.
The girls' hostel (built 1984) accommodates approximately 130 cadets in 70 single-seater and 30 double-seater rooms.
Single and double rooms are spacious, with separate tables, chairs, a bed, bookshelf, and cupboard. First-year students share rooms; second-years move to single rooms; third-years shift to private rooms in the boys' hostel building. The whole residential complex has internet access and a housekeeping team.
The mess (opened 2009) offers subsidized four-meals-a-day dining with proper seating. Students also get two hair-cutting salons, a cycle-repair shop, cafeterias, reading spaces, and a garden.
Weekend getaways near campus include Osho Garden, Empress Gardens, Aga Khan Palace, and Shaniwar Wada.

AFMC does not offer scholarships; instead, it provides a heavily subsidized fee structure, allowances, and stipends:
There is only a one-time fee, a large part of which is refunded after the student completes the program.
The college provides various allowances to cadets, including a uniform allowance, a haircut allowance, and a monthly stipend.
AFMC's internship stipend is among the highest in India, at approximately ₹60,000.
Because AFMC does not run a scholarship scheme, there is no separate scholarship application — allowances and the subsidized fee structure apply to all cadets.
The subsidized fees and allowances support cadets across the full course rather than through a one-off award.
Cadets join the Armed Forces Medical Services after the course; opting out into private practice requires repaying the bond amount to the college authority.
