The University of Queensland (UQ Medical School, founded 1936) is a top-45 global university and one of Australia's leading medical schools. The MD is accredited by the Australian Medical Council (AMC), so graduates are eligible for provisional registration with the Medical Board of Australia (Ahpra) and an Australian internship, and UQ is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) — which also opens ECFMG certification and the USMLE for the United States. How to Apply
UQ has two admission routes to the MD: provisional entry for school-leavers and graduate entry for degree-holders. Confirm the exact current process for international applicants on study.uq.edu.au.
School-leavers apply for a provisional/assured MD place with a strong adjusted ATAR (around 95 or equivalent), Year 12 English, and the UCAT ANZ or ISAT (for international applicants). This is the route that lets Class-12 students start on the UQ medicine pathway.
Graduates apply after a bachelor's degree with a GPA of about 5.0, the GAMSAT (minimum 50 per section) or MCAT (about 504), and an interview.
Provisional-entry students complete a qualifying bachelor's degree (maintaining the required GPA) before progressing to the MD; graduate-entry students have already done this.
Meet the English requirement (about IELTS 7.0) and apply through the correct international route with academic and test documents.
Successful applicants receive an offer and apply for the Australian student visa (subclass 500), meeting the Genuine Student requirements.
Indian students who intend to practise in India must have qualified NEET-UG before starting the medical program and obtain the NMC Eligibility Certificate; this does not apply if the plan is to practise in Australia (see FMGE & NExT).
For provisional entry, applicants need Year 12 (Class 12 equivalent) with a strong adjusted ATAR (around 95), Year 12 English, and the UCAT ANZ/ISAT; they then complete a qualifying bachelor's degree before the MD. For graduate entry, applicants need a completed bachelor's degree with a GPA of about 5.0, plus the GAMSAT (or MCAT) and an interview. No Indian student enters the MD directly from Class 12 — the MD itself is graduate-entry. Indian students who intend to practise in India must also qualify NEET before starting.
Prerequisites:
There is no specific upper age bar; applicants must meet the requirements of their chosen route. Indian students planning to return to India should note the NMC's own rules (including NEET) apply to them.
Applicants need the academic and test requirements for their route (UCAT/ISAT for provisional; GAMSAT/MCAT + interview for graduate), English proficiency and a student visa; Indians intending to practise in India also need NEET and the NMC Eligibility Certificate.

Decide between provisional entry (from Year 12, with the UCAT) and graduate entry (after a degree, with the GAMSAT/MCAT and interview), and prepare for the right test.

Budget realistically: about ₹2.2-2.4 crore for the MD, plus living, and a prior bachelor's if you use graduate entry. Confirm the current fees before committing.

Legacy
The University of Queensland's medical legacy is defined above all by world-changing research, from the invention of the HPV cancer vaccine to a Nobel laureate among its graduates. The figures below are verified; where someone is famous as a UQ professor or a founder rather than an MD graduate, that is stated plainly.
Ian Frazer is an immunologist at the University of Queensland who, with the late Dr Jian Zhou, invented the technology behind the HPV vaccine, the world's first vaccine to prevent a cancer. Developed at UQ in the 1990s, the vaccine (marketed as Gardasil and Cervarix) is now used worldwide to prevent cervical and other cancers; Frazer was named Australian of the Year in 2006. It is one of the great achievements of Australian medical research.
Jian Zhou was a Chinese-Australian virologist and molecular biologist who, working with Ian Frazer at the University of Queensland, co-invented the virus-like particle technology at the heart of the HPV vaccine. His contribution was essential to a vaccine that now saves many lives each year; he died in 1999, before the vaccine reached the world, and is honoured as its co-inventor.
Peter Doherty was born in Brisbane and graduated in veterinary science from the University of Queensland before undertaking graduate research overseas. With Rolf Zinkernagel he discovered how the immune system recognises virus-infected cells, work that won the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and greatly advanced immunology and transplantation. He was named Australian of the Year in 1997 and remains one of UQ's most distinguished graduates.
Stuart Pegg graduated in medicine from the University of Queensland in 1956 and became a pioneer of burns surgery, developing and leading life-saving treatment for critically ill burns patients in Queensland and across Australia. His work established modern burns care in the state and improved survival and recovery for countless patients.
Errol Solomon Meyers was a Brisbane surgeon and a driving force behind the founding of the University of Queensland's Medical School in 1936, helping establish medical education in the state. He is commemorated by the Errol Solomon Meyers Memorial Lecture. He was a founder of the school rather than one of its graduates.
UQ's medical program is delivered by the UQ Medical School, which sits within the University's health faculty (recently restructured as the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences), through UQ's research institutes and Brisbane's teaching hospitals. 100% Veg options available. Vegetarian food is easily available in cafeterias, restaurants, grocery stores and student accommodation across Brisbane. As a large, multicultural city, Brisbane is very good for Indian and vegetarian food.
Brisbane has a large Indian community and many Indian restaurants and eateries (with hubs in suburbs such as Sunnybank, West End and the CBD), so Indian food, including regional cuisines, is easy to find.

Practising in India
An Indian graduate of the University of Queensland who wants to practise in India follows the National Medical Commission (NMC) route: qualifying NEET before starting, meeting the NMC's foreign-graduate conditions, clearing the screening examination (currently the FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), completing the required internship in India and registering. Because UQ's MD can be reached through provisional or graduate entry, the mapping to India's rules needs care, and many UQ graduates instead build careers in Australia.
Step 1
An Indian student who intends to practise in India must have qualified NEET-UG before beginning the medical program abroad, and obtain the NMC Eligibility Certificate. This applies to the India-return plan; it is not an Australian requirement.
Step 2
The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 set conditions on course-plus-internship duration completed at the same institution, English-medium teaching, and a degree that entitles practice in the country of study. Australia is English-medium and the MD entitles practice in Australia, but confirm in writing with the NMC how the UQ pathway (including any prior bachelor's for graduate entry, or the qualifying degree for provisional entry) and the internship are counted.
Step 3
Graduates returning to India must clear the qualifying examination (FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), complete the required internship in India, and register with the NMC or a State Medical Council.
