Introduction

University of Niš Faculty of Medicine

The University of Niš Faculty of Medicine is an established European medical school in Niš, Serbia's third-largest city, in the south of the country on the Nišava river. Founded on 18 May 1960, it is part of the University of Niš and offers an official English-taught six-year integrated MD in Medicine (the MBBS-equivalent, 360 ECTS), with clinical training at the Clinical Centre of Niš, one of Serbia's largest hospitals. The University of Niš is ranked in the QS World University Rankings, and the Faculty is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognised by ECFMG and WFME. Importantly, Serbia is a European, EU-candidate country and is not affected by the sanctions that apply to Russia, so it is a normal, accessible study destination. Its total tuition (about EUR 36,500 over six years) is the lowest of the three Serbian medical faculties. For Indian students it is a solid, comparatively affordable European route, with the honest trade-offs that it is ranked in a lower QS band than Belgrade, that its fees are higher than Russia or Kazakhstan, and that some Serbian is needed for the clinical years.

Practising in India

FMGE & NExT Details

An Indian graduate of the University of Niš Faculty of Medicine who wants to practise in India follows the licensing pathway set by the National Medical Commission (NMC): qualifying NEET before starting, completing a course and internship that meet the NMC's conditions, clearing the NMC screening examination (currently the FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), completing the required internship in India and registering with the medical council. The NMC does not “approve” individual foreign universities; it sets conditions, and the Serbian MD structure should be checked against them.

  1. Step 1

    NEET Before You Start

An Indian student must have qualified NEET-UG before beginning the course abroad to be eligible later for Indian licensing. A qualifying NEET score is required, and an NMC Eligibility Certificate is now expected before starting.

  2. Step 2

    Meet the FMGL 2021 Conditions

The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require the course and internship to meet the NMC's minimum duration (about 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship), completed in the same institution, taught in English, with a degree that entitles the holder to practise in the country of study. Because Niš awards a six-year integrated MD with a final internship year (and Serbia has its own state-licensing steps), students must confirm in writing how these conditions are met.

  3. Step 3

Clear the FMGE / NExT and Register

Graduates must clear the qualifying examination for foreign medical graduates, currently the FMGE, which India is replacing with the National Exit Test (NExT), then complete the required internship in India and register with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council.

Life in Niš

Niš is Serbia's third-largest city, in the south on the Nišava river, famous as the birthplace of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great and for its Niš Fortress and lively food and cafe scene. It is one of Serbia's more affordable cities, with a friendly, student-oriented atmosphere. Its continental climate brings cold winters and hot summers. Serbia is about 3.5–4.5 hours behind Indian time.

Challenges and Growth

Adjusting to a new country and a demanding course takes effort, and students should learn some Serbian for the wards, but Niš's affordability, friendly atmosphere and international community make it a comfortable place to study.

Social Life

Niš has a lively student and cultural scene, with cafes, festivals (including the Nišville Jazz Festival), a historic fortress and easy travel around Serbia and the Balkans, so international students can build a strong community.

Overall Experience

Studying MBBS/MD in Niš is about gaining a recognised, English-taught degree from an established, QS-ranked-university faculty at the most affordable Serbian tuition, in a friendly southern-Serbian city, provided you understand it is a mid-tier-ranked option, pass the entrance exam, learn some Serbian and clear the FMGE/NExT for India.

Fees & Financial

Fees & Financial Planning

Niš is the most affordable of the three Serbian medical faculties, so realistic financial planning across the whole six-year course matters; banking and payment from India are straightforward as Serbia is not sanctioned.

International students pay EUR 8,000 in Year 1 and EUR 5,700 in each subsequent year — about EUR 36,500 over six years, the lowest total of Serbia's three medical faculties. With Niš living costs the realistic all-in is roughly ₹45–55 lakh across the course — higher than Russia or Kazakhstan, but the cheapest Serbian option and far below Western-European or UK medical degrees.

  • EUR 8,000 Year 1, then EUR 5,700/year (~EUR 36,500 total, about ₹34 lakh)
  • Niš living costs about ₹28,000–₹53,000 a month
