Introduction

Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy

Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timișoara (UMFVBT) is one of Romania's leading medical universities, established in 1945 and named after the pioneering Romanian bacteriologist Victor Babeș. Based in Timișoara, Romania's third-largest city and a 2023 European Capital of Culture, it teaches across four faculties — Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing — and a network of Timișoara teaching hospitals. In January 2023 it became internationally accredited by the Independent Agency for Accreditation and Rating (IAAR), an accreditation recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME). The six-year Medicine programme is taught entirely in English and leads to the Romanian Doctor-Medic degree, equivalent to an MBBS. Admission is through the university's own multiple-choice entrance tests in Biology and English, rather than NEET, though Indian students still need to qualify NEET to obtain the eligibility certificate the National Medical Commission (NMC) requires for studying MBBS abroad and for licensing later. The degree is recognised across the European Union, listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, WFME-accredited via IAAR and recognised by the NMC.
