Introduction

George Emil Palade University (UMFST Târgu Mureș)

The George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Târgu Mureș (UMFST) is a public university in Târgu Mureș, in the Transylvania region of Romania. Medical teaching in the city dates from 1945, and the university carries the name of George Emil Palade, the Romanian-born cell biologist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1974 — the first Romanian Nobel laureate. Today UMFST teaches more than 10,000 students, including over 2,300 international students from around 105 countries, across its campuses in Târgu Mureș and Hamburg, Germany (UMCH). The Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme is a six-year, full-time degree taught entirely in English, worth 360 ECTS credits and equivalent to an MBBS, with clinical training in the university's network of Târgu Mureș teaching hospitals and clinics. Admission for international students is on a rolling basis with interview sessions, based on Class 12 results rather than a national entrance exam, though Indian students still need to qualify NEET to obtain the eligibility certificate the National Medical Commission (NMC) requires for studying MBBS abroad. The English medicine programme is accredited by Romania's ARACIS and by the IAAR — an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) — listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, and recognised by the NMC, the WHO, the UK GMC and the ECFMG.
