Introduction

Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine

Vilnius University (VU) is the oldest and largest university in Lithuania, founded in 1579, and one of the oldest universities in Central and Eastern Europe. Its Faculty of Medicine, with roots in medical teaching from 1781, is the country's leading medical school and teaches medicine in English in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital. Vilnius University is ranked #446 in the QS World University Rankings 2026, the highest-ranked university in Lithuania, and hosts more than 900 international students from over 70 countries. The Medicine programme is a six-year, full-time, integrated degree taught entirely in English, leading to a Master's-level Medical Doctor qualification that is equivalent to an MBBS. Admission is by evaluation of academic results (strong grades in biology, chemistry and physics) and English proficiency, rather than NEET, though Indian students still need to qualify NEET to obtain the eligibility certificate the National Medical Commission (NMC) requires for studying MBBS abroad and for licensing later. The Medicine programme is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (through Lithuania's WFME-recognised agency, SKVC), listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, recognised across the European Union and by the NMC.
