Introduction

Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU)

The Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) in Kaunas is the largest university of health sciences in Lithuania and the Baltic region. It was formed in 2010 through the merger of Kaunas University of Medicine, whose medical education roots reach back to 1922, and the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy. LSMU has more than 8,000 students, over a fifth of whom are international, coming from more than 70 countries, and it teaches medicine in English in Kaunas, Lithuania's second-largest city. The Medicine programme is a six-year, full-time, integrated degree taught entirely in English, leading to a Master's-level Medical Doctor qualification equivalent to an MBBS. Admission is by a university entrance test in the sciences and English, rather than NEET, though Indian students still need to qualify NEET to obtain the eligibility certificate the National Medical Commission (NMC) requires for studying MBBS abroad and for licensing later. The programme is recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (through Lithuania's WFME-recognised agency, SKVC), listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, recognised across the EU, by the ECFMG for the US route, and by the NMC.
