Sir Peter Freyer
Sir Peter Freyer graduated from Queen's College Galway in 1874 with an MD, MCh and a string of gold medals. In 1900 he pioneered the suprapubic (total) prostatectomy, going on to perform more than 1,600 of the operations and transforming the treatment of prostate disease worldwide. The University of Galway still holds the annual Sir Peter Freyer Memorial Lecture and Surgical Symposium in his honour.
