Introduction

Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU)

Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) is the oldest and leading medical university in Georgia and one of the most respected in the Caucasus region. Its history begins on 17 June 1918, when the Faculty of Medicine was opened at Tbilisi State University, and TSMU is today the #1 medical university in the country. It teaches medicine in English in Tbilisi, the Georgian capital, and hosts more than 3,500 international students from over 80 countries, including a large Indian community. The MD (Medicine) programme is a six-year, full-time degree taught entirely in English and is equivalent to an MBBS, structured as five years of academic and clinical study followed by a final internship year. Admission is direct, with no entrance exam, based on Class 12 results in the sciences and English plus an English interview, rather than NEET, though Indian students still need to qualify NEET to obtain the eligibility certificate the National Medical Commission (NMC) requires for studying MBBS abroad and for licensing later. The degree is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education through Georgia's WFME-recognised agency (NCEQE), and recognised by the NMC, WHO and ECFMG.
