Introduction

University of Nicosia Medical School

The University of Nicosia (UNIC) Medical School opened in 2011 as the first medical school in Cyprus, launched in partnership with St George's, University of London through a graduate-entry MBBS. It has since grown into the largest medical school in Cyprus and now runs its own independently accredited Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree, taught entirely in English, with campuses in Nicosia and Athens. In 2025 it was ranked #1 in Cyprus for Clinical Medicine in the ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects. The main pathway for Indian students entering directly from school is the six-year MD, equivalent to an MBBS; a five-year graduate-entry MD is available to those who already hold a degree. Admission is based on academic grades and English proficiency rather than a competitive entrance exam, though Indian students still need to qualify NEET to obtain the eligibility certificate the National Medical Commission (NMC) requires for studying medicine abroad and for licensing later. The degree is WFME-accredited through Cyprus's national agency, listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, recognised across the European Union and used by graduates for the UK (GMC) and US (ECFMG) routes.
