Introduction

Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine

The Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine is one of Egypt's leading medical schools and the country's third-oldest. Founded in 1947 as the Faculty of Medicine of Demerdash and joined to Ain Shams University in 1950, it is part of Ain Shams University, one of Egypt's top and QS-ranked universities, in Cairo. It teaches the MBBCh (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, the MBBS-equivalent) in English, with clinical training across the huge Ain Shams University Hospitals, including El Demerdash Hospital, one of the largest hospital complexes in Egypt. The Faculty is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognised by ECFMG and WFME (and accredited in Egypt by NAQAAE). Egypt is a normal, accessible study destination (it is not affected by the sanctions that apply to Russia). For Indian students it is a prestigious, English-taught, affordable route with an exceptional clinical base, with the honest trade-offs that it is ranked in a lower QS band than Cairo University, that the degree structure should be confirmed for Indian licensing, and that some Arabic is useful in the wards.

Plan Honestly

Be realistic: Ain Shams is ranked in a lower QS band than Cairo University, the MBBCh structure (about 5+2) should be confirmed for NMC compliance, the Indian community is modest, some Arabic helps in the wards, admission is competitive, and you must still clear the FMGE/NExT to practise in India.

Career Pathways After MBBS at Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine

The MBBCh from the Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognised by ECFMG and WFME, opening licensing pathways in India, the United States, the Gulf and other countries.

Practising in India

FMGE & NExT Details

An Indian graduate of the Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine who wants to practise in India follows the licensing pathway set by the National Medical Commission (NMC): qualifying NEET before starting, completing a course and internship that meet the NMC's conditions, clearing the NMC screening examination (currently the FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), completing the required internship in India and registering with the medical council. The NMC does not 'approve' individual foreign universities; it sets conditions, and the Egyptian MBBCh structure should be checked against them.

  1. Step 1

    NEET Before You Start

An Indian student must have qualified NEET-UG before beginning the course abroad to be eligible later for Indian licensing. A qualifying NEET score is required, and an NMC Eligibility Certificate is now expected before starting.

  2. Step 2

Meet the FMGL 2021 Conditions (confirm the structure)

The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require the course and internship to meet the NMC's minimum duration (about 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship), completed in the SAME institution, taught in English, with a degree that entitles the holder to practise in Egypt. Because Ain Shams's MBBCh is on Egypt's reformed structure (about 5+2), students must confirm in writing how the study duration and internship map to these conditions.

  3. Step 3

Clear the FMGE / NExT and Register

Graduates must clear the qualifying examination for foreign medical graduates, currently the FMGE, which India is replacing with the National Exit Test (NExT), then complete the required internship in India and register with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council.

Life in Cairo

Its climate is hot and dry, with very warm summers. Cairo is about 3.5 hours behind Indian time.

Challenges and Growth

Adjusting to a large, busy capital and a demanding course takes effort, and some Arabic helps in the wards, but Cairo's affordability, rich culture and English-taught programme make it a rewarding place to study, with a modest but growing Indian community.

Social Life

Cairo has a huge student population and a vibrant cultural life, from the Nile corniche and historic sites to cafes and markets, so international students can build a community in one of the world's most storied cities.
