MBBS in Lithuania 2026: LSMU Kaunas Fees, NEET Cutoff and the Application Deadline

Why is the LSMU Kaunas deadline so urgent right now?

Every EU partner university sets its own cut-off, but Lithuania's is unusually late in the cycle and unusually final. LSMU's official 2026 admission rules list a first application deadline of 6 July 2026, followed by an "additional admission to selected programmes" window from 7 July, and then a second and final deadline on 30 July 2026, with the online portal explicitly stated to close "at 00:00" that day. Read literally, that means new applications stop being accepted at the very start of 30 July. The practical cut-off is the end of the day today, 29 July 2026, Indian Standard Time differences aside. LSMU has also scheduled one more entrance-test sitting, on 30 July 2026 at 10:00 AM, for candidates who have already applied.

This collides directly with an already-compressed NEET UG 2026 cycle. The National Testing Agency's originally scheduled 3 May 2026 exam was cancelled on 12 May after investigators found overlaps between a leaked "guess paper" and the actual question paper, according to the Daily Pioneer. NTA held a Re-NEET on 21 June 2026, a pen-and-paper sitting with an extended duration and a fresh choice of exam city, and declared results on 16 July 2026, roughly two months later than a typical year. That compression is exactly why so many EU deadlines, including Lithuania's, now sit in the same narrow window as India's own counselling process, rather than safely before it.

What does LSMU Kaunas's 2026 application calendar actually look like?

LSMU's own admissions page lays out the full cycle for the Medicine programme in English. Working through it in order:

1. 1 November 2025: the online application portal opens for the 2026/27 intake.
2. 10 November 2025: LSMU begins reviewing submitted applications.
3. 13 January 2026: the period of entrance tests and motivational interviews begins for early applicants.
4. 6 July 2026: the first stated application deadline; the portal was scheduled to close at 00:00 that day.
5. 7 July 2026: a further "additional admission" window opens for selected programmes, including Medicine.
6. 30 July 2026: the final application deadline; the portal is scheduled to close at 00:00, with one last entrance-test sitting held the same day at 10:00 AM for candidates already in the system.

How much does MBBS in Lithuania cost at LSMU Kaunas?

LSMU's own 2026/27 tuition-fees page, updated in April 2026, states the Medicine programme costs €12,800 per year for the first three years and €13,300 per year for Years 4 to 6. Multiplying that out gives a six-year tuition total of roughly €78,300, before living costs, the €150 non-refundable application fee, and travel. LSMU charges EU and non-EU international students the same tuition rate, so there is no separate, higher "non-EU" fee band to budget for, unlike some destinations.

This tuition, converted to roughly ₹71 to 73 lakh for the full six years at current indicative exchange rates, sits comfortably below the total cost of most private and deemed medical colleges in India and in line with the rest of futureMBBS's 9-country EU network. Do Indian students need to sit the LSMU entrance test?

Not always. LSMU's official 2026 admission rules list a specific set of "formally acknowledged educational systems" that exempt an applicant from its own entrance test, provided a minimum score is met, and NEET is explicitly one of them. Per LSMU's published exemption table, a NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) score of 650 or above exempts an Indian applicant from sitting LSMU's own Biology/Chemistry test and interview.

This is a genuinely useful shortcut, but it does not remove NEET from the picture altogether. It only waives LSMU's own internal test.

1. Qualify NEET UG: you still need a qualifying NEET score to have any foreign MBBS/MD degree recognised by India's National Medical Commission (NMC) later, regardless of your LSMU entrance-test status.
2. Check your NEET score against the 650 threshold: 650 or above waives LSMU's own entrance test; below that, you will need to sit it.
3. If required, sit LSMU's entrance test: an interview plus a 90-minute, 60-question multiple-choice test (30 Biology, 30 Chemistry), held online with a registration link sent by LSMU's admissions office.
4. Confirm English proficiency: IELTS 5.5+, TOEFL iBT 4.0+, or an equivalent B1-level certificate; if you don't have one, LSMU offers its own English test instead.
5. Have documents apostilled: India is a Hague Convention member, so your Class 12 marksheet and certificate need an Apostille (typically via the Ministry of External Affairs), not full consular legalisation.

Is a Lithuanian MBBS degree recognised for practice in India?

LSMU's Medicine programme is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), the WFME/FAIMER-maintained global register that is the actual recognition benchmark for foreign medical degrees, not a "WHO approval" or an "NMC-approved list," neither of which exists as such. What matters practically for an Indian student is: (1) the WDOMS listing, (2) completing a programme structure that satisfies the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021 (broadly, at least 54 months of study plus a 12-month internship at the same institution), and (3) individually clearing India's licensing exam afterwards.

That licensing exam remains the real bottleneck. The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), being transitioned toward the National Exit Test (NExT) and still deferred as of mid-2026, had a pass rate of just 12.77% in the June 2026 sitting (4,635 of 36,300 candidates), per the National Board of Examinations. LSMU's six-year, continuous MSc in Health Sciences/Medical Doctor programme is structured the way the NMC expects, but that alone does not make FMGE easy; treat exam preparation as a six-year commitment that starts in Year 1, not a final-year scramble. Should you register for MCC counselling or lock in Lithuania first?

For most families the honest answer is: don't treat this as either/or. As of this writing, the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) had not yet published the official NEET UG 2026 counselling schedule, though Round 1 registration is widely and consistently reported as expected around 31 July to early August 2026 on mcc.nic.in. Given LSMU's own deadline falls in the same narrow window, families weighing both options are effectively being asked to decide before either process has fully clarified its own dates.
