MBBS in Georgia 2026: Fees, FMGE Data and the Rules

MBBS in Georgia costs roughly USD 5,500 to USD 8,000 a year in tuition at the main English-medium universities, over a six year, 360 credit programme. Georgia-trained candidates passed FMGE at 32.36 per cent in the December 2025 session, against an all-country rate of 23.94 per cent, which puts Georgia among the stronger destinations on the only measure that matters.

Two conditions in the NMC rules are not settled cleanly by the Georgian structure, though, and no honest page about Georgia can skip them. They are below, with the Indian government document that sets them out.

What does MBBS in Georgia cost?

Georgian universities publish their fees openly, in US dollars, per academic year. There is no separate rate for Indian students.

Fees from each university's own published fee page. Petre Shotadze Tbilisi Medical Academy adds a one-time registration fee of USD 300 and a reservation fee of USD 2,100. Teaching University Geomedi requires English at B1 level or an entrance examination.

Tbilisi State Medical University also publishes rates for its other tracks, which is worth knowing because families are sometimes quoted one and enrolled in another: the Georgian-medium MD is USD 4,000 a year, the Russian-medium MD USD 5,000, dentistry in English USD 7,000, and the separate American MD programme USD 13,500 a year.

On living costs, Petre Shotadze Tbilisi Medical Academy publishes indicative monthly figures for its international students: accommodation USD 250 to 600, food USD 100 to 200, utilities USD 50 to 150, transport USD 15 to 30, and health insurance USD 7 to 25.

What is the programme at Tbilisi State Medical University?

Tbilisi State Medical University runs a one step educational programme for MD in English medium, awarding the degree of Medical Doctor. Its own programme document puts the volume at 360 ECTS credits, with one ECTS credit equal to 30 hours and one year corresponding to 60 credits, which makes the programme six years. The learning language is stated as English.

Admission of foreign citizens is governed by Order N224/n of the Georgian Minister of Education and Science, dated 29 December 2011.

In the FMGE 2024 annual report, 703 candidates from the Tbilisi State Medical University Faculty of Medicine appeared and 215 passed, a rate of 30.58 per cent. Other Georgian institutions in the same table ranged from Grigol Robakidze University at 20.66 per cent to Georgian American University at 80.33 per cent on a small cohort of 61.

How do Georgia-trained candidates perform in FMGE?

Better than most destinations, and better than the all-country average in three of the last four cycles.

From the NBEMS FMGE performance reports. Appearances are counted per session, so a candidate sitting twice in a year is counted twice.

Set against the same December 2025 session, Georgia at 32.36 per cent sits above the Russian Federation at 30.94 per cent, Kazakhstan at 29.33 per cent, Ukraine at 21.48 per cent and China at 14.26 per cent. That is a genuine argument for Georgia and it is worth making with the number rather than an adjective.

Where does the Georgian structure sit against the NMC rules?

This is the part that needs care, and the best source for it is an Indian government document rather than a university brochure.

The Embassy of India in Yerevan, which is concurrently accredited to Georgia, issued a revised advisory to Indian students on 29 September 2022. It states that the undergraduate MD programme in Georgia runs six years and 360 ECTS "including internship during the 6th, graduating year", that students have clerkships and internships in clinical settings during the ninth to twelfth semesters, and that the sixth year comprises studies in a clinical environment entirely, with clerkships and internship over that period comprising 120 ECTS.

Hold that against the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021, which require fifty-four months of course followed by a twelve month internship at the same foreign institution, and two things come into focus.

The internship is inside the degree, not after it

Georgia does not have a separate post-degree internship year. The clinical clerkship and internship sit inside the six years. On duration Georgia is comfortably past fifty-four months, but whether an embedded sixth year satisfies the NMC's separate twelve month internship condition is not resolved by any NMC document currently published. The embassy advisory also notes that universities without their own clinic sign memoranda of understanding with several clinics, which sits awkwardly against the requirement that the internship be at the same foreign institution.

The degree alone does not license independent practice

The same advisory records that a graduate may be employed only as a junior doctor, and that the right of independent medical practice requires a postgraduate residency and a pass in the state certification examination, under Articles 5 and 17 of the Law of Georgia on Medical Practice. The NMC requires registration in the country of the degree at par with the licence given to that country's own citizens, so this is a condition to raise with the university in writing.

Tbilisi State Medical University has publicly disputed the advisory. Its rector issued a special announcement on 5 June 2023 stating that the version circulated contained information inconsistent with the Law of Georgia on Medical Practice, and that the university was working with the Georgian authorities to have a corrected version communicated to the Embassy. Both documents are on the record, and a family choosing Georgia should read both rather than either alone.

Who accredits Georgian medical universities?

The National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement, NCEQE, is Georgia's authorisation and accreditation body, and it publishes the list of authorised higher education institutions. The Embassy of India in Yerevan links Indian students to that list.

NCEQE holds recognition status with the World Federation for Medical Education until October 2028. WFME recognises agencies rather than individual medical schools, so this tells you that a credible body audits medical education in Georgia, not that any particular university is approved.

Worth noting for comparison: the Philippine agency PAASCU is recognised until April 2033 and the National Medical Commission itself until September 2033. Georgia's 2028 date is nearer, and recognition is renewed rather than permanent.

Has the NMC issued any warning about Georgia?

No. A search of the National Medical Commission notice archive returns no notice naming Georgia. The Commission has issued country alerts for Uzbekistan and Belize, and the Embassy of India in Yerevan has issued an institution-specific advisory against St. Tereza Medical University in Armenia, but nothing of that kind exists for Georgia.

The absence of a warning is not a clearance. The licentiate conditions apply in Georgia exactly as they do everywhere else, and the two open points above are the ones to settle before a deposit is paid.

How to check a Georgian university before you pay

Five steps, in this order.

1. Confirm the university appears on the NCEQE list of authorised higher education institutions in Georgia.

2. Get the programme document, not the brochure, and check that it states 360 ECTS and English as the learning language for all six years.

3. Ask in writing where the sixth year clerkship and internship are served, and whether the university owns that clinic or works under a memorandum of understanding with it.

4. Ask what registration the degree gives the holder in Georgia on graduation, and get the answer about junior doctor status in writing.

5. Check the university's own FMGE figures in the NBEMS performance report rather than the country average, because the spread between Georgian universities is wide.
