Pursuing an MBBS degree abroad holds equal validity compared to studying in India. Many Indians opt for overseas medical education due to various reasons, primarily stemming from the limited availability of medical seats in Government Medical Colleges in India. Consequently, numerous students choose to pursue their medical education abroad. Widely regarded as a favorable choice for Indian students, studying medicine in foreign countries not only offers affordable tuition fees but also provides ample opportunities for exploration and experience, contributing to their development as proficient doctors.

Duration of MBBS Abroad

Moving on to the duration of MBBS programs abroad, it’s highlighted that the time frame varies across countries, with many offering medical education spanning 5.5 or 6 years.

Is MBBS from Abroad Valid in India?

Indian students pursuing MBBS abroad must comply with National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines issued on November 18, 2021. To practice in India, Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) must pass the ‘National Exit Exam,’ while those returning from abroad must clear the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) organized by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). Validity requires studying in MCI-approved colleges, and foreign returned medical graduates must pass both the MCI screening test and the FMGE for practice in India.

About FMGE

The FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) is a test in India for Indian citizens who have studied medicine abroad and want to practice in India. The exam happens twice a year, in June and December, usually on the third Monday or Tuesday of the month. People get three chances to pass the test.

What Is the NExT Exam?

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced a new exam called NExT (National Exit Test) to replace NEET PG, INI-CET, and FMGE, serving as the sole gateway for obtaining a medical license in India. The NExT exam is mandatory for both Indian and foreign medical graduates, replacing various existing entrance exams for postgraduate courses.

NExT Exam Eligibility Criteria:

Students pursuing undergraduate courses in medical sciences are eligible for the NExT exam, according to guidelines provided by the NMC in the released draft. The eligibility criteria for the NExT exam are outlined as follows:

  1. Students enrolled in MBBS programs at medical institutes approved by the NMC qualify for the National Exit Exam.
  2. MBBS graduates from foreign medical universities, affiliated by the NMC, must take the NExT exam to obtain a license for commencing their medical practice in India.
  3. The National Exit Test for MBBS consists of two papers – NExT Paper-1 and NExT Paper-2.
  4. NExT Paper-1 is a substitute for the final year MBBS exams.
  5. After successfully clearing Paper-1, students must complete a mandatory 12-month clinical internship to be eligible for NExT Paper-2.
  6. The NExT Paper-1 score is applicable for seat allocation in PG courses after the completion of the internship.
  7. The validity of NExT Paper-1 is two years.

Advantages of Studying MBBS Abroad

1. No Entrance Exams:

Some of the foreign universities don’t even have entrance tests for MBBS admissions. This is beneficial for students who don’t perform well on standardized tests but have a strong interest and aptitude to study medicine.

2. Accelerated Programs:

Some countries provide accelerated MBBS programs, which allow students to finish their degree in less time than traditional MBBS programs. This is attractive for those who want to enter the workforce early and begin their medical careers early.

3. Global Networking Opportunities:

One of the benefits of studying abroad is that you can build a network of friends and colleagues from all over the world. This network can be invaluable in terms of working together, conducting research, and advancing your career.

4. Personal Growth and Independence:

Living abroad promotes self-improvement, independence, and flexibility. For healthcare workers, who may need to work in a variety of demanding settings at some point in their careers, these attributes are crucial.

5. Enhanced Research Opportunities:

MBBS studies abroad often provide students with access to innovative research facilities and partnerships with world-class medical institutions. This gives them the opportunity to participate in meaningful research projects that help advance medical knowledge. Exposure to different research methods and global healthcare issues can help develop a research-focused mindset, which is beneficial for future healthcare leaders.

6. Holistic Approach to Medicine:

Many international MBBS programs focus on holistic medicine, which means they emphasize not only the science of medicine, but also the patient-centric care, ethical principles, and communication. This holistic approach to medicine gives students a broader view of healthcare and prepares them to deal with the complexity and multidisciplinary nature of medicine. The holistic approach to medicine provides students with a broad set of skills that are essential for providing patient-centered healthcare anywhere in the world.

Conclusion

In summary, pursuing an MBBS degree abroad is a valid choice for Indian students, addressing the challenge of limited seats in Government Medical Colleges. The duration varies (5.5 or 6 years), and adherence to National Medical Commission (NMC) guidelines, including exams like the ‘National Exit Exam’ or Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE), is essential. The National Exit Test (NExT) introduced by the NMC replaces multiple entrance exams for postgraduate courses, providing a unified pathway to a medical license.
