• Kazan is the capital of Russian medical education. Two strong universities, a large Indian community, and living costs of roughly Rs 15,000 to 22,000 per month.
• St. Petersburg combines Pavlov University's clinical reputation with a large international student population and living costs between Moscow and Kazan.
• Regional cities such as Volgograd, Smolensk, Orenburg, and Tver host long-established medical universities with the lowest fee and living-cost structures. The trade-off is smaller cities, harsher winters in some regions, and fewer direct travel connections to India.

MBBS in Russia: Programme Details

• Intake: The main intake is September/October each year. Application windows generally run from spring to late summer. Some universities operate a smaller February intake; verify directly with the university.
• Duration and degree: 6 years for the English-medium General Medicine programme, awarded as an MD (Physician), the Russian equivalent of MBBS.
• Medium of instruction: English at around 50 universities. Students also study the Russian language during the first years, because from the third year onwards patient interaction in clinical settings happens in Russian. This is a real workload and a real skill requirement, not a formality.
• Syllabus structure: Years 1 and 2 cover pre-clinical sciences (Anatomy, Histology, Biochemistry, Physiology). Years 3 and 4 move into para-clinical subjects (Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology) with bedside teaching. Years 5 and 6 are clinical, rotating through Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and allied departments in university hospitals.
• Entrance requirements: There is no separate Russian entrance examination for most universities. Admission is based on Class 12 PCB marks, NEET qualification, and document verification. A small number of top universities, including Sechenov and Lomonosov MSU, conduct their own entrance testing or interviews for international applicants.

Recognition of Russian Medical Universities

• NMC (India): The National Medical Commission does not maintain a positive "approved list" of foreign universities. Instead, under the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, an Indian student's foreign degree is acceptable only if the programme meets NMC conditions: minimum 54 months of study plus 12 months of internship, full English medium, completed physically on campus, at a university listed on WDOMS, followed by clearing the FMGE.
• WDOMS: Around 50 Russian universities offering English-medium medicine are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools at search.wdoms.org.
• Other bodies: Russian state medical universities operate under the Ministry of Health or Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. WDOMS listing also underpins eligibility for ECFMG certification (USA route), subject to ECFMG's current requirements.

Eligibility Criteria

• Minimum age 17 years by 31 December of the admission year.
• Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, with at least 50% marks (40% for reserved categories as per NMC norms).
• NEET UG qualification is mandatory, and the qualification remains valid for three years for foreign admission purposes.
• A valid passport, and apostilled Class 10 and 12 documents for visa and university enrolment.
