Victor Babes University in Timisoara

Named after the Romanian pathologist Victor Babes, the Victor Babes University in Timisoara is located in the west of the country and offers 85 new places in human medicine every year in the winter semester. But studying dentistry or pharmacy would also be possible at this university.

Medical University Cluj-Napoca

The study of medicine at the Medical University of Cluj-Napoca begins every year in the winter semester. It is also possible to study dentistry here. The duration of study for human medicine and dentistry is 6 years each. Western University Vasile-Godiș Arad

Medical studies in Arad are offered annually in the winter semester for 75 new international applicants in French or English. The university has a strong focus on research.

The beautiful city of Arad is located directly on the Mures River. The cityscape is characterised by rich, extravagant architecture and has thus earned the nickname "little Vienna". In terms of leisure activities, in addition to the numerous sights, there is also the possibility of long hikes in the nearby Zarandului Mountains. 

University of Târgu Mureș

The study of human medicine at the George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science and Technology of Târgu Mureș also takes place in English for the winter semester. The special feature: the medical faculty has a campus in Hamburg. Therefore, the pre-clinical part, i.e. the first three years of study, takes place mainly in Germany. It is important to the university to give students a holistic introduction to all areas, skills and abilities relevant to the profession. In addition to learning the medical facts, this also includes emotional aspects of medicine. 

Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iaşi

The university in Iaşi attracts about 450 new international medical students every year because it is cheap, application chances are high and no entrance test is required. In addition to studying human medicine, it is also possible to study dentistry in English or French. Since the curriculum is very similar to the German curriculum, transfers to German universities are possible.

Iaşi is located in the north-east of Romania. The "cultural capital" is home to the oldest university, the oldest theatre and the oldest botanical garden in the country.

University of Oradea

Every year in the winter semester, about 100 new students are admitted to the University of Oradea to study medicine. Campus life is characterised by the many international students.

With many baroque buildings, the city stretches along the banks of the Crişul Repede River. Although Oradea does not have a large city centre, it still has an international community and many activities and nightlife options for students due to its many universities.

Studying Medicine in Romania - Requirements

In order to be admitted to study medicine in Romania, you need the general higher education entrance qualification, i.e. the Abitur.

For the application to the University of Cluj, No entrance test is required. You can take a language test via the university or TOEFL.  

The University of Iaşi requires good science grades for admission to medical studies. Internships, letters of recommendation, education and degrees in other subjects can be helpful in the application. There is no entrance test.

The University of Timisoara expects an English proficiency certificate. There is also an entrance test with a focus on biology.

Arad University also has an entrance exam in biology with multiple choice questions. You should have a language certificate of at least B1 in English or French.

In order to be admitted to the University of Oradea, you can either prove your English language skills via an exam or by means of a TOEFL/ IELTS test. In a personal interview, your knowledge of biology or organic chemistry will be tested. Here you can choose one of the two subjects.

Medical studies in Romania - structure

Medical studies in Romania are very similar in structure to medical studies at German universities. The Duration of medical studies is also six years.

In the first four semesters, the pre-clinic, a basic knowledge is created. The focus is on anatomy, biochemistry, physiology and medical terminology.

This is followed by the clinical section of the degree. Internships in hospitals allow students to come into contact with patients. There are also lectures for the various disciplines such as internal medicine, surgery, psychiatry, gynaecology or paediatrics.

The last year is the practical year (PJ), just like in Germany, and is completed on various wards in a hospital of choice.

Medical studies in Romania - Costs

The Costs of a medical degree in Romania vary depending on the region and university. The University of Oradea, for example, charges 2,72,196 INR (3,000 euros) per semester, making it the cheapest. The universities of Iaşi, Cluj and Timiriri follow with about 3,62,928 INR (4,000 euros) per semester. The University of Arad charges its students a little more, at 5,67,127 INR (6,250 euros) per semester.

On the other hand, Romania has a very low cost of living compared to many other European countries. Depending on the city, you can expect to pay between 13,610 INR and 36,295 INR (150 and 400 euros) for rent. For food, you can add 9,073 INR to 18,144 INR (100 to 200 euros), depending on your diet. Including leisure activities and transport costs, you can expect to pay between 45,360 INR and 63,515 INR (500 and 700 euros).
